What is SMS Chatbot (Twilio)?

The SMS Chatbot (Twilio) integration allows you to deploy your BotPenguin chatbot on SMS by connecting it with Twilio. Once configured, the chatbot can automatically send and receive messages using a Twilio phone number, enabling conversational automation over standard SMS channels.

How to Use SMS Chatbot (Twilio)

A. Installing the SMS Chatbot in BotPenguin

  1. Log in to your BotPenguin account.

  2. Select the SMS bot that you want to install from your bot list.

  1. Navigate to the “Install Your Chatbot” option (second option in the bot menu).

  2. Click on “Install Your Chatbot” and choose “Twilio” as the platform.

  1. The Twilio prerequisites screen will appear, asking for:

    1. Account SID

    2. Auth Token

    3. Twilio Phone Number


Part 2: Getting the Required Information from Twilio

  1. Open Twilio and sign in to your account. If you do not have an account, create one and complete the onboarding process.

  2. Once onboarding is complete, you will land on the Twilio Dashboard.

  1. If you do not already have a Twilio phone number:

    1. Click on “Get a number” on the onboarding or dashboard screen.

    2. Purchase a phone number using trial credits or added billing credentials.

    3. Twilio will assign you a 10-digit phone number.

  2. After obtaining the number, go to Phone Numbers → Manage → Active Numbers.

  3. Scroll down to the Account Info section, where you will find:

    1. Account SID

    2. Auth Token

    3. Twilio Phone Number


Part 3: Completing the Installation

  1. Copy the Account SID, Auth Token, and Phone Number from Twilio.

  2. Paste these details into the corresponding fields on the BotPenguin installation screen.

  3. Click “Save Credentials”.

Once saved, the SMS chatbot will be successfully installed using Twilio.

Do I need a paid Twilio account to install the SMS chatbot?

You can start with Twilio’s trial account and use the provided credits to purchase a phone number. However, production usage may require upgrading your Twilio plan.

Where can I find my Twilio Account SID and Auth Token?

These details are available on the Twilio Dashboard under the Account Info section once you log in.

Can I use an existing Twilio phone number?

Yes, any active Twilio phone number associated with your account can be used for SMS chatbot installation.

What happens if I enter incorrect Twilio credentials?

The chatbot will not install successfully. Ensure that the Account SID, Auth Token, and Phone Number are copied exactly as shown in Twilio.

Can I change the Twilio number after installation?

Yes, you can update the credentials by revisiting the installation settings and saving new Twilio details.
