# Integrate BotPenguin with Magento

Connect your WhatsApp Chatbot to Magento so customer events — abandoned carts, new orders, order updates, refunds, cancellations, and new customer signups — automatically trigger WhatsApp messages, wi

### What is Magento Integration?

Magento is an e-commerce platform businesses use to run their online stores. By connecting Magento to your WhatsApp Chatbot on BotPenguin, you can automatically send WhatsApp messages to customers based on events happening in your Magento store — such as an abandoned cart, a new order, an order update, a refund, a cancellation, or a new customer signing up — without anyone on your team having to trigger these manually.

***

### When Should You Use This?

Use Magento Integration when:

* You want to automatically recover abandoned carts by sending a WhatsApp reminder to customers
* You want customers notified over WhatsApp automatically as their order is created, updated, refunded, or canceled
* You want new Magento customers captured as leads in your BotPenguin Inbox

***

### How It Works

The setup has two parts:

1. **Install and connect Magento** — You install the BotPenguin connector module in your Magento store, then connect it to BotPenguin using a webhook URL and secret. This tells Magento where to send event data.
2. **Configure automated messages** — Once connected, you choose which Magento events should trigger a WhatsApp message, and select the approved template to send for each one.

***

### Before You Begin

* A WhatsApp Chatbot already set up in BotPenguin that you want to configure Magento with
* Admin access to your Magento store
* Meta-approved WhatsApp templates for the messages you want to send

***

### Step-by-Step Instructions

#### Part A: Connect Magento from Third Party Integration

#### Step 1: Find Magento in Third Party Integration

1. Select the WhatsApp bot you want to configure Magento with.
2. Go to "Third Party Integration."
3. Search for Magento. Its status will show as "Not Connected," with the option to "Connect."
4. Click "Connect."

***

#### Step 2: Copy Your Webhook URL and Secret

1. You'll be redirected to a screen showing your Webhook URL and Webhook Secret.

<figure><img src="https://1745791824-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FAPDb8cKQtGlIAfgHjcsQ%2Fuploads%2FMT67pGl3vqzv4k4zNtfu%2Fimage%20(97).png?alt=media&amp;token=d187b0a5-f58f-46f4-96a0-a39b80d17b6c" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="warning" icon="triangle-exclamation" %}
Your Webhook Secret is only shown once. Copy and store it somewhere safe — if you leave or refresh this screen, you won't be able to view it again. The Webhook URL will remain visible. If you miss copying the secret, click **"Regenerate Webhook Secret"** to generate a new one.
{% endhint %}

#### Part B: Install and Configure the Connector in Magento

#### Step 1: Install the BotPenguin Connector Module

BotPenguin's Magento connector isn't currently listed on the Magento Marketplace. Until then, install it via Composer:

1. Visit <https://packagist.org/packages/botpenguin/module-connector>.
2. Follow the required and recommended installation commands listed on that page.

Once installed, the connector will be available under your Magento configuration.

#### Part C: Verify the Connection and Configure Messaging

#### Step 1: Confirm the Connection

1. Return to BotPenguin and click **"Refresh."**
2. The screen should update to show the **Connected** state, along with a **"Disconnect"** option.

<figure><img src="https://1745791824-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FAPDb8cKQtGlIAfgHjcsQ%2Fuploads%2FNvTQIpJz7PH1SeID4Ozf%2Fimage%20-%202026-08-20T072351.824.png?alt=media&amp;token=874fc5ad-c586-4a26-9b61-2c6a4e9ef306" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* **On:** Customers from Magento events are added as leads in your BotPenguin Inbox.
* **Off:** No new leads are created.

***

#### Step 3: Configure Magento Automated Messages

Each Magento event appears as its own expandable section. Six events are available: Abandoned Cart Recovery, Order Created, Order Updated, Order Refunded, Order Canceled, and Customer Created.

Abandoned Cart Recovery works a little differently from the rest, since it needs a reply message configured:

1. Expand "Abandoned Cart Recovery."

<figure><img src="https://1745791824-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FAPDb8cKQtGlIAfgHjcsQ%2Fuploads%2FM7U1tCNV3FZPzE83rulE%2Fimage%20-%202026-08-20T072447.456.png?alt=media&amp;token=56402411-fd9e-411e-9108-8b105b91a89e" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

2. Turn on **"Enable Abandoned Cart Recovery."**

{% hint style="info" icon="lightbulb" %}
Template delivery may be delayed by up to 5 minutes.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="https://1745791824-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FAPDb8cKQtGlIAfgHjcsQ%2Fuploads%2FDsopQZmxxNn0KhYPaE63%2Fimage%20-%202026-08-20T072517.130.png?alt=media&amp;token=311f7da3-0f08-4cc6-94d7-046bce055164" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

3. Click **"Add Reply Message"** to open the **"Configure Automated Messages"** pop-up.
4. In the pop-up:
   1. **Select Template:** choose your Meta-approved template.
   2. **Send After:** enter a number, then choose the unit — **Minutes** or **Hours** — for how long after the cart is abandoned the message should send.

<figure><img src="https://1745791824-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FAPDb8cKQtGlIAfgHjcsQ%2Fuploads%2FUjQb5npZJdNokMfwnMZL%2Fimage%20-%202026-08-20T072544.978.png?alt=media&amp;token=2fea538c-07e7-420a-857c-fa949bfd4dca" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

5. Click "Save" on the pop-up.
6. Repeat steps 3–5 if you want to add more than one reply message.
7. Click "Save Changes" on the main screen.

The remaining events — Order Created, Order Updated, Order Refunded, Order Canceled, and Customer Created — are simpler:

8. Expand the event.
9. Turn on its toggle to enable it.
10. Select the Meta-approved template to send.

<figure><img src="https://1745791824-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FAPDb8cKQtGlIAfgHjcsQ%2Fuploads%2F98AyLdewokHnhT1RL31Z%2Fimage%20-%202026-08-20T072611.604.png?alt=media&amp;token=69f9ad05-be8c-4d08-a092-5e57095b5f10" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="warning" icon="triangle-exclamation" %}
Partial refunds are not currently supported as a trigger event.
{% endhint %}

### Best Practices

> 💡 Copy your Webhook Secret immediately when it's generated — it can't be retrieved again later

> 💡 Get your WhatsApp templates approved by Meta in advance, so they're ready to select when configuring each event

> ⚠️ Set a reasonable "Send After" time for Abandoned Cart Recovery so customers aren't messaged too soon after leaving their cart

> 🎯 Test the integration with a demo order before relying on it for real customer notifications

### Troubleshooting

<details>

<summary>Magento doesn't appear under Stores → Configuration</summary>

Confirm you've installed the BotPenguin connector module via Composer using the required and recommended commands, then clear your Magento cache and refresh the admin dashboard.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Connection doesn't show as "Connected" after saving in Magento</summary>

Double-check the Webhook URL and Webhook Secret were pasted correctly with no extra spaces, confirm "Enabled" is set to "Yes" in the Magento Connector settings, then click "Refresh" on the BotPenguin screen.

</details>

<details>

<summary>An order was placed but no message was sent</summary>

The order needs a valid billing phone number — orders with none, or one WhatsApp can't reach, are recorded but not messaged. Confirm a template is selected and the toggle is on for that event. Note that partial refunds don't trigger a message in the current version, only a full refund does.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Nothing is arriving at all, even though the setup looks correct</summary>

Your Magento server needs to be able to reach BotPenguin's webhook over the internet — if your hosting blocks outgoing connections, ask your provider to allow the webhook address. Also confirm the Webhook URL is copied exactly with no extra spaces. If your store or BotPenguin was briefly unreachable during an event, that one event won't retry automatically — trigger a new event (like a test order) to confirm things are working now.

### FAQs

<details>

<summary>Is Magento Integration available for all bot types?</summary>

No. Magento Integration is available for WhatsApp Chatbots only.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What if I miss copying my Webhook Secret before leaving the screen?</summary>

Click "Regenerate Webhook Secret" on the BotPenguin connection screen, then update the new secret in your Magento Connector settings and save again.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Why don't Abandoned Cart Recovery messages send even though orders and customer messages work fine?</summary>

Abandoned cart detection depends on a scheduled task Magento runs automatically in the background — confirm it's set up and running. A cart only qualifies once it's sat untouched for the configured delay (30 minutes by default), has items, and is linked to a customer email; guest carts with no email aren't detected. Each cart sends one message — an untouched cart won't send a second reminder.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Why doesn't the new-customer message arrive right after sign-up?</summary>

This is expected. Magento's sign-up form doesn't collect a phone number, so the message only sends once the customer has one on file — for example, after saving an address with a phone number, or registering during checkout.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Where do I install the BotPenguin connector for Magento?</summary>

Since it isn't currently listed on the Magento Marketplace, install it via Composer using the package at packagist.org/packages/botpenguin/module-connector.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What happens if I don't turn on "Create Inbox Leads"?</summary>

No new leads will be created in your Inbox from Magento events, though your automated WhatsApp messages will still send as configured.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I use the same template for multiple events?</summary>

Yes, you can select the same Meta-approved template for more than one event if it fits.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Are partial refunds supported as a trigger event?</summary>

No, partial refunds are not currently supported.

</details>

<details>

<summary>How long does it take for an Abandoned Cart Recovery message to send?</summary>

Delivery may take up to 5 minutes after the "Send After" time you've configured in the pop-up.

</details>
