Prerequisites

Before you begin, ensure you have:

• A Mem0 account (Free or Paid)

• A BotPenguin account with access to the AI Agents module

Note: Mem0's free plan is sufficient for most use cases and can be used to complete this integration.

How to Integrate Mem0 with BotPenguin

Step 1: Create a Mem0 Account

1. Visit the Mem0 website and click Sign Up.

1. After signing up, complete the short onboarding questionnaire presented by Mem0.

Step 2: Create an API Key

1. Once onboarding is complete, Mem0 automatically prompts you to create your first API key.

1. Enter a name for your API key. For example:

   1. Mem0 Default Key

   2. BotPenguin Memory Key

   3. Production Memory Key

This name is only used within your Mem0 account to help identify the key.

1. Click Create Key.

2. Copy the API key displayed on the screen.

Important: Mem0 displays the API key only once. Make sure to copy and securely store it before closing the window.

Alternative Method to Create an API Key

If you skipped the initial popup or need another API key:

1. Open the left sidebar.

2. Navigate to API.

3. Click Create New API Key.

1. Enter a unique name for the key.

1. Click Create Key.

2. Copy the generated API key.

Step 3: Connect Mem0 to BotPenguin

1. Open your BotPenguin account.

2. Click More from the left sidebar, and select Integrations. Locate Mem0 and click on the integration

1. Enter the following information:

   1. Configuration Name: Enter a unique name for this configuration. It is recommended to use the same name you assigned to the API key in Mem0.

   2. API Key: Paste the API key you copied from Mem0.

1. Click Connect.

Your Mem0 configuration has now been successfully added to BotPenguin!

Step 4: Enable Mem0 for an AI Agent

Connecting Mem0 to BotPenguin does not automatically enable it for your AI agents.

To activate it:

1. Open the AI Agent you wish to configure.

2. Navigate to Advanced Settings.

1. Scroll to the bottom of the page and open the "Advance Memory Retention" expandable.

2. Enable the Advanced Memory Retention toggle.

1. Under Memory Provider, select Mem0.

2. Select your connected Mem0 configuration.

3. In the description field, specify what information Mem0 should retain.

For example:

Store important user information shared during conversations, including customer preferences, previously discussed topics, and long-term context for future interactions.

1. Click Update.

Your AI agent is now configured to use Mem0 for long-term memory retention.

And that's it! You have successfully connected Mem0 with BotPenguin and enabled long-term memory for your AI agent.

Troubleshooting

Integration is not connecting

Verify that:

• Your Mem0 API key has been copied correctly without any extra spaces.

• The API key has not been deleted or regenerated in your Mem0 account.

• Your internet connection is stable.

• You clicked Connect after entering both the Configuration Name and API Key.

If the issue persists, create a new API key in Mem0 and reconnect the integration.

Advanced Memory Retention section is not visible

Ensure that:

• You are editing an AI Agent.

• Your BotPenguin workspace has access to the Advanced Memory Retention feature.

• You have opened the Advanced Settings section and scrolled to the bottom of the page.

AI Agent is not remembering previous conversations

Verify that:

• Advanced Memory Retention is enabled.

• Mem0 is selected as the Memory Provider.

• The correct Mem0 configuration has been selected.

• The AI agent has been saved after configuring the memory settings.

Remember that only information matching your memory description will be retained and retrieved.

API key was lost after creation

Mem0 only displays an API key once after it has been created.

If you no longer have access to the key, generate a new one from API → Create New API Key inside your Mem0 dashboard and update the configuration in BotPenguin.

Exceeded Mem0 usage limits

If you have exhausted your free plan limits, visit Usage & Billing in your Mem0 dashboard and upgrade to a plan with higher request limits.

Do I need a paid Mem0 plan?

No. Mem0's free plan provides sufficient limits for most AI agents. You only need to upgrade if your application exceeds the available request limits.

Can I create multiple Mem0 API keys?

Yes. Mem0 allows you to create multiple API keys, making it easy to manage different projects or environments.

What happens if I lose my API key?

Mem0 only displays an API key once after it is created. If you lose it, you'll need to generate a new API key from the API section of your Mem0 dashboard.

Can I use the same Mem0 configuration for multiple AI agents?

What should I write in the memory description?

Interact with your AI agent by sharing information that should be remembered. Start a new conversation later and verify that the AI agent recalls the stored information appropriately.

Can I upgrade my Mem0 plan later?

Yes. You can upgrade your subscription at any time from the Usage & Billing section of your Mem0 dashboard.

Can I change my API key later?

Yes. Create a new API key in Mem0, then update the configuration in BotPenguin by reconnecting the integration with the new key.
